In my talk I will describe two specific applications of NEMS that we are pursuing: vacuum-based mass spectrometry and fluid-based chemical force assays. In both of these arenas ultraminiature mechanical devices offer intriguing new functionality the single-molecule limit. 1. Introduction NEMS are microelectromechanical devices scaled to submicron dimensions.

Microelectronics, for example, uses lithographic methods to assemble inorganic and metallic materials into layered devices, whereas, biology uses self-assembly and cnzymatic routes to assemble biopolymers into complex three-dimensional architectures. Further, information in microelectronics is transmitted with electrical currents and potentials whercas biology relies on molecular recognition and enzymatic reactions to transmit information. Technical advances that bridge these differences could enable new classes of hybrid technologies.
